RUNNING RIOT (article first published : 2001-03-21)

Paul Slabolepszy’s new play Running Riot opens on May 29 at the Playhouse Drama. The production is staged by Space Kids - Paul Slabolepszy and Bill Flynn - the same dynamic team that produced the smash hit Heel Against the Head which played to phenomenal houses around the country. Whereas Heel celebrated the 1995 World Cup Rugby, Running Riot has as its backdrop The Comrades Marathon. Veteran runner and Comrades winner Bruce Fordyce has acted as technical advisor on the show.

Against the advice of his mate Tjokkie Hetherington (Bill), Crispin Wentzel (Paul) has entered the 2001 Comrades in order to win a R1,000 bet off a rival in Phalaborwa. Tjokkie is more interested in fishing in Durban, the rugby and rather naively believes all a “second” does is drive a bakkie to Drummond with a couple of Powerades in the back! When Crispin spots Svetlana Molotova (the drop dead gorgeous Russian athlete) his priorities shift. Tjokkie reminds him of what happened "at the Rugby World Cup" when Crispin’s wife (Celeste) arrived, unannounced – but Crispin’s testosterone levels have rendered his rational brain useless. Molotova becomes his prey!

In their tatty beachfront hotel, all hell breaks loose before the race when Crispin tests positive for a "banned substance" – Tjokkie’s "fault" since he bought the cough mixture! The ducking and diving resulting from this debacle plus the dubious dabblings with the delicious dolly-bird (her ex-KGB love-cum-trainer Vladimir Brutonov in tow) provides the chaotic canvas for this new comedy.
