SCHOOL BRINGS MUSICAL TO KZN (article first published : 1999-06-27)

Northcliff High School in Blackheath, Johannesburg has, over the past 20 years, built up a tradition of fine musical presentation. Under the careful and exacting guidance of Nick Jourdan, the many productions, including Guys & Dolls, the new Pirates of Penzance, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Hello, Dolly!have elicited such comments from audience members as “We cannot believe that these are school children performing on the stage”, “Your shows could have sophisticated audiences anywhere in the world entertained” and “In 30 years of teaching, I have never seen a school show of this calibre”.

Upon seeing a Northcliff High production for the first time, the new headmaster, Mr David Klein, said after Hello, Dolly!last year, that if first sports teams could be sent on tour to represent the school and match their achievements with others, so should the drama team, after their months of dedication, rehearsal and preparation, be sent out to show off and share their excellence. (Ed.Note: What an example for other school principals to follow!)

In a bold and daring move, a surprisingly young cast will be appearing at the Playhouse Drama in this year’s production of Chicago by John Kander and Fred Ebb and, if the reactions of the home audiences can be a gauge, Durban theatregoers should be delighted .

The show opens at 19h00 on July 13 with snacks and drinks prior to the performance at 19h30. Thereafter performances take place at 19h30 from July 14 to 17 with an early evening show on July 18 at 18h00. There will be matinees on July 14 and 17 at 14h30

Says Nick Jourdan, the director, designer and choreographer: “We strive for excellence. We don’t always succeed, but we trust that if you should invest in the price of a ticket, you will consider it money well spent. See and enjoy this show. These kids have worked really hard!”

Booking is at Computicket.
