BREASTS (article first published : 2000-12-3)

International award-winner and a winner of over 20 local awards, performer Greig Coetzee brings his new hilarious one-hander Breasts - a Play about Men to the Square Space Theatre at the University of Natal.

The production played the Standard Bank Arts Festival in Grahamstown and, more recently, at the Hilton Arts Festival to full houses and rave public reviews. Breasts is set to charm audiences with its incisive wit and clever revelations of a selection of South African men as they wade heroically through the quagmire of nation full of colourful contradictions.

A new platoon of South African males has been assembled by Greig, who is currently riding on the wave of two recent international awards he received for his production of White Men With Weapons at the 2000 Edinburgh festival. This bunch of boys is unarmed, out of uniform and into women.

The premise of the piece is very simple: it's about men talking about women - their lovers and mothers, their sisters and wives.

"I didn't want to create a simple battle-of-the-sexes piece,” says Greig. “All that Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus crap. Yes, some of the characters are stereotypes because many stereotypes do exist. Van der Merwe is not just a joke. We laugh at these stereotypes because we recognise them not only on stages and screens; but also on the street.

“But it is not enough to just regurgitate these types. You have to give them a new spin, make them individual, throw in a few surprises. And that is what I have tried to do in this piece. I've taken some okes and some new age men and some in-betweeners we all know. And, hopefully, I'm going to show some things about them that you didn't know or that you just hadn't noticed before. And on the way I want you to laugh at them and cry with them.”

Breasts runs at the Square Space until December 30. Book at Computicket or Teletix on (031) 304-2753. Save by booking directly at http://www.computicket.com

Greig will perform two matinee shows of his smash hit “White Men With Weapons” on December 9 and 16 at 14h30.
