NEW SUBURBIA (article first published : 2008-08-18)

Ashwin Singh, Hamish Kyd and Dhaveshan Govender have written a hilarious sketch-based topical comedy - New Suburbia- which comes to Catalina Theatre in Wilson’s Wharf from August 19 until September 7 after a short run at the iZulu Theatre at Sibaya.

Featuring Hamish Kyd, Dhaveshan Govender, Ashwin Singh and Shika Budhoo, this delightfully funny show is a series of skits and stand-up insights at a group of Indian and Coloured people who have moved to former White suburbs. From the entertaining philosophies of Prof Gopal and Uncle Johnny to the misadventures of copyright cop, Buzz Moodley to the eccentric memoirs of Rikesh and his days at “Old Trafford”, the show features a kaleidoscope of memorable characters everyone will recognize.

Ashwin Singh and Hamish Kyd, having previously written and produced several dramatic and comedy shows, decided that it would be very relevant and entertaining to construct and mount a sketch-based comedy and stand-up show which examined the lives of Indian and Coloured people who had moved to formerly all-White suburbs.

“Indian and Coloured people have made significant contribution to the evolution of this province and have a rich and diverse culture. We also believe that there are many authentic and colourful characters in these communities, several of whom feature in this show. Hence the creation of New Suburbia, which also incorporates some of the clever writings of Dhaveshan Govender, and the diverse performance skills of Shika Budhoo,” says Ashwin Singh, writer, actor and supervising producer of the show.

New Suburbia runs at Catalina Theatre from August 19 until September 7 with performances from Tuesday to Saturday at 20h00 (Sundays at 18h00). Bookings through Catalina on 031 305 6889.
