COMRADES ARMS (article first published : 2000-11-10)

Anthony Akerman, well-known for his serious dramatic works Somewhere on the Border, Old Boys and Dark Outsider, decided to change gear and write for laughs. Thus was born the farce Comrades Arms which premiered at this year’s Standard Bank National Arts Festival in Grahamstown where it played to capacity houses and great critical acclaim. (see Grahamstown crit in the archives of this section)

The setting is Knysna, the establishment a B&B known as The Comrades Arms - so titled because its owner (played by David Butler) is a returned exile. Chaos breaks out when his wife (Judy Broderick) suspects him of being involved with the pretty young waitress (Heidi Melendez) who seems determined to remove her clothes at any opportunity. There is an unreliable telephone system and the situation is further complicated by the arrival of what appears to be a sinister outsider (Ben Kruger). who is “looking for a girl”. It takes the intervention of a smooth undercover operator (Joss Levine) to sort out the chaos.

Comrades Arms runs at the Hilton College Theatre from November 16 to 18 at 20h00 with a matinee on November 18 at 15h00. Tickets R40 (R35 for pensioners, students, pupils and block bookings of 10 seats or more). Book via Doreen on (033) 343-0126.

The production then moves to Durban and the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre where it runs from November 21 to December 31. Tickets for the Durban run are R45 from Tuesdays to Thursdays and Sundays. Tickets R50 for Friday and Saturday performances. Book at Computicket or through Teletix on (031) 304-2753.
