SPRINGBOK RADIO ONLINE (article first published : 2008-06-25)

Springbok Radio programmes will soon be accessible on the internet.

For the uninitiated, Springbok Radio was a highly popular commercial radio station operating under the auspices of the SABC. It produced a massive amount of radio drama featuring some of South Africa’s finest acting talent. It was closed down in 1984, the reason cited as a loss of listeners to the television medium, and many people today still bemoan its passing.

According to the Springbok Radio Preservation Society of South Africa, programmes such as Squad Cars, Lux Radio Theatre, Taxi and The Creaking Door will take to the airwaves again when the society launches its fully-fledged internet radio service on July 1.

For the past 21 years, the society has been collecting, restoring and archiving over 20,000 original Springbok Radio programmes spanning nearly 35 years.

The new service will operate 24 hours a day, repeating a six-hour compilation of programmes four times daily to accommodate listeners both at home and on an international level.

Programming will change on a daily basis and would also include other favourites such as The Epic Casebook, The Men from the Ministry, the Sounds of Darkness, High Adventure and many more.

The radio service would be available to all internet users free of charge. There will also be new programming. The new streaming service will operate from the society’s website at www.springbokradio.com from July 1.

You can still hear Springbok Radio styled radio entertainment regularly from Lotus FM during the week with three slots a day. artSMart editor, Caroline Smart, is a freelance radio director/producer with Lotus FM, introducing a new generation of actors – and listeners - to this fascinating medium.
