STORY SEEKER (article first published : 2008-06-7)

After her successful production of Pinocchio at the Kwasuka Cutting Edge Theatre in July last year, Adi Paxton is producing Story Seeker, a new innovative show for slightly older audiences at the same venue.

Directed by Gerard Samuel, Story Seeker features traditional shadow puppet techniques and tells a Xhosa tale of Mazanendaba, the story seeker. The cast comprises ‘Lwazi Ncube, Adi Paxton and Pamela Tancsik.

Adi Paxton and Pamela Tancsik have teamed for a third time at the invitation of the Internationale Puppenteatre Tage in Mistelbach, Austria. This time they have moved into a new area with the fusion of shadow puppets, based on the Asian and North African traditions and a Xhosa tale based on Mazanendabe by Gcina Mhlope.

They are also using music and will be led by talented opera singer ‘Lwazi Ncube, most recently seen in Masterclass at the Playhouse. The set has been designed and constructed by Trevor Yates, an experienced ex-props maker at the Playhouse, who acts as magical consultant to the team. They are directed by Gerard Samuel, now Director of the Dance School at UCT, but formerly well known as a dance administrator and choreographer in KZN. The show has been made possible with funding from the National Arts Council.

Story Seeker runs from 19 to 29 at Kwasuka Cutting Edge Theatre with performances daily at 11h00 with performances at 14h00 on June 20, 21, 28 and 29 only. Tickets R50 (R30 children) booked through www.strictlytickets.com or call 031 305 6889. Block bookings R25 pp. with teachers free.

There will be special school performances from June 19 to 27 at 11h00 and 09h00. Contact 031 201 2515.
