ANDRE THE HILARIOUS HYPNOTIST IN PMB (article first published : 2008-05-19)

Feel like being the superstar of an evening’s theatre performance? No auditioning (or talent) required. Just come to Andre The Hilarious Hypnotist which returns to the Hexagon Theatre.

Often confused with a mentalist or comedian, Andre is actually an award-winning hypnotist. But if your idea of a hypnotist is a tuxedo swinging a pocket watch, prepare to be shocked. Unlike other hypnotists, Andre The Hilarious Hypnotist is pulling the art of stage hypnosis into the 21st Century. His wacky physical comedy and electrifying personality separates this show from the typical hypnosis show. For most South Africans Andre’s show has become a yearly institution, seeing him travel across the country in similar fashion to his mentor and teacher the late Max Collie.

Stage Hypnosis is truly audience participation at its finest. Volunteers (and he does only use volunteers) will be hypnotized to open their imaginations and create a visual interpretation of hilarious acts. For most hypnotists, that alone would be enough. However, Andre The Hilarious Hypnotist maintains his reputation of being the funniest hypnotist today with his adrenaline induced originality and constant peppering of unpredictable wit: turning people into sprinkler systems, or the lone ranger riding a “noodle”, or a passionate Tango dancer - these are just the start of an evening of hilarious entertainment, suited for young and old.

Andre The Hilarious Hypnotist runs at the Hexagon Theatre in Pietermaritzburg from May 26 to 31 at 19h30. Tickets R40 Wednesday to Friday booked on 033 260 5537, or e-mail hexagon@ukzn.ac.za There are Specials on Monday and Tuesday at R25 (tickets only available at the door)
