WOW COMEDY JAMZ (article first published : 2008-04-19)

Itís fresh; itís new and itís wow Ö.! Wow Comedy Jamz will feature the traditional names on the comedy circuit as well as very funny fresh blood when it has its next instalment on April 23 in the Playhouse Drama.

This month features Durbanís own John Vlismas. As one of South Africaís most prolific comedians, John is well known for his versatility and punishing schedule. Heís written for Jerry Springer; has represented South Africa at comedy festivals in Melbourne (sold-out), Montreal (the only South African comic invited back twice) and Berlin, and has hosted prime-time talk shows. He has racked up hundreds of corporate functions as MC, entertainer and facilitator for such clients as FNB, SAB, Adobe, and Microsoft, all of whom return repeatedly for more of his signature high octane style.

Vlismas has written, directed and produced seven one-man theatre shows. He has scripted and performed for the FNB Life Start and SAB Brand Power national road shows. He has also produced and directed two prime-time TV shows, and regularly performs at the countryís longest running comedy night, The Comedy Underground, in Melville, which he co-founded with Bevan Cullinan.

The young and vibrant Trevor Noah started his career in the entertainment industry on the popular local soapie Isidingo and soon thereafter hosted an educational show on SABC2 for two years. While still on TV, Noah started hosting his own radio show Noahís Ark on Gauteng radio Station Yfm. He co-anchored the SABC1 hit entertainment tabloid-styled Real Gobhoza, and is fresh from the Strictly Come Dancing TV show as a finalist.

Moving into the world of comedy, Noah quickly amassed respect as a comedian and performs at many of the comedy shows around the country including Blacks Only, State Of The Nation and the Vodacom Campus Comedy Tour to mention a few. Performing at countless clubs around the country, Noah also MCís at Dacqs Cafť in Pretoria and Rhazoos at Morula Sun Casino. Working all over the country he does company functions either performing or working as an MC. His amazing impersonations and acting skills are complimented by the fact that he understands and speaks no less than six South African languages. A regular feature at Podium Entertainmentís comedy clubs in Johannesburg, Trevor Noah is an all-round performer and an immensely talented young man.

Roni Modimola from Pure Monate fame; Durbanís Koobeshan Naidoo, and the funniest journo Carvin Goldstone complete the line up.

Supported by the Durban Arts and The Daily News, Wow Comedy Jamz will start at 19h30 and tickets are available at Computicket and Shoprite / Checkers for R80.
