KING OF OLD TRAFFORD (article first published : 2008-04-10)

Dhaveshan Govender launches his one-man play, King of Old Trafford, at Seabrooke’s Theatre at Durban High School on April 9.

After a successful run at last year’s National Arts Festival, Dhaveshan Govender finally launches the play in Durban. Billed as “one man’s tale of life, love and Manchester United”, the play features Govender as Ricky, a hard-core fan of England’s most well-known football team. Ricky’s passion for the Red Devils sees him relegate every other aspect of his life to the sidelines. As a result, his life falls apart.

This is where the audience finds Ricky – alone in a sparsely furnished flat, waiting for the game to start. With only a teddy bear for company, his mind wanders and he recollects his past, trying to piece together the shards of his shattered life.

The play, directed by Vivian Moodley, runs for an hour, in which Dhaveshan plays various characters, some instantly recognizable to anyone who’s ever watched sport in a pub. Reactions to this play have been favourable from both sexes, a relief to men dragged to the theatre by their better halves. This short run precedes a quick appearance at the Witbank Civic, before the obligatory return to Grahamstown.

King of Old Trafford runs from April 9 to12 at 20h00 at Seabrooke’s Theatre, DHS. Tickets R60 can be purchased at the school or through Computicket outlet. More information from Dhaveshan Govender on 076 785 2034.
