WIZARD OF OZ AUDITIONS (article first published : 2008-03-31)

KickstArt, the producers of such highly successful family shows as Winnie The Pooh, Aladdin and Jungle Book, are looking for talented young people to appear in their forthcoming production of the classic musical, The Wizard Of Oz.

The production will be staged at The Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre from August 16 to September 7, and will rehearse from July 21 to August 15, afternoons, evenings and Saturdays.

Director, Steven Stead, and choreographer, Janine Bennewith are looking for the following types of artists to play certain roles:

15 Children (Age 11 to 16 years): To play the Munchkins and Winged Monkies. Must be able to act, and have strong physical/movement abilities. Singers will be given preference.

6 Young Adults (Age 18 to 30 years, 3 male and 3 female): To play featured chorus roles: Munchkins, Crows, Apple Trees, Poppies, Oz citizens, Jitterbugs and Winkies. Men must be able to sing and act to a high level, and have extremely strong movement abilities. Women must be able to dance, and have some acting experience, and be able to sing to an average level.

The auditions will be held on April 12 in Studio M1 at The Playhouse Company’s Mayville complex, 78 Ramsay Avenue. All are open auditions operating on a first come, first served basis. Lists open from 09h30.

Audition times are: 10h00 to 13h00: Children aged 11 to 16 years; 14h00 to 15h30: Chorus Auditions - male (adults aged 18 to 30 years), and 15h30 to 17h00: Chorus Auditions – female (adults aged 18 to 30 years):

All candidates must wear movement/dance clothes and appropriate shoes (no slops or sandals). Auditions will consist of a dance session followed by a singing workshop for those that get through the dance section.

(NB: There are two Tuesday performances of The Wizard Of Oz scheduled for August 26 and September 2, which will take place from 11h00 to 14h00. All school-attending children and University students will need to make arrangements to be at these performances or forfeit being in the production.)

ALSO NOTE: For children under 16 years old, there is no financial remuneration for appearing in the production.
