RADIO LIVE! (article first published : 2008-02-20)

Late last year, a group of radio personalities decided to pool their talents to help their colleague Keith Millar and his wife Beverley cope with heavy medical expenses incurred during the prolonged illness of their son. Sadly, Daniel Millar died a few weeks ago after a courageous struggle with an aggressive form of Hodgkins Disease. He was only 23.

The idea is to present a fundraising supper theatre evening called Radio Live! which will take place at the George Campbell Technical High School, which Daniel attended.

“The line-up will include much-loved voices/faces from the Springbok Radio era who will remind us of the magic of radio drama and we’ll introduce some new faces from the rebirth of radio drama in Durban at Lotus FM,” says theatre all-rounder Caroline Smart who is organising the evening with Oliver Hart, Tansen Nepaul and Deon Chetty – all musicians who also work for Radio Broadcast Facilities in Durban along with Keith Millar.

“The programme will include a series of comedy sketches,” Caroline Smart adds. “Tansen Nepaul and Deon Chetty will provide some Bollywood themes and Oliver Hart and his band will perform some toe-tapping popular numbers to dance to at the end of the evening. As Splashy Fen was the highlight of Daniel’s year, Miriam Erasmus (2008 featured Splashy artist) has agreed to perform as well as popular singer and Ukhozi FM presenter, Thokozani Mkhize. All artists and presenters will be giving of their services free of charge.”

Taking audiences on a hilarious stroll down memory lane are radio actors Roger Service, Tom Read, Frank Graham, Margaret Logan (formerly Milner-Smyth), Brian Squires, Caroline Smart and Peter Gardner. Well-known radio personalities and presenters will also appear on the programme.

Patrons are to bring their own picnic refreshments and a cash bar will be available as well as safe parking on the field right next to the school.

Radio Live! takes place at 19h00 for 19h30 on March 3, at George Campbell Technical High School, Brickfield Road.

Tickets R100 booked through Troubadour Productions, 292 Jan Smuts Highway, Mayville, or at the Going Places/Strictly Tickets stand at the Essenwood Craft Market on Saturday mornings.
