JAMAL SYNDROME (article first published : 2008-02-20)

The theatrical duo of Essop Khan and Mohamed Ali is back with an updated version of their smash hit comedy Jamal Syndrome, which had its first performance 21 years ago. Although still set in the apartheid era when inter-racial marriages were prohibited, the production has been revamped to keep its appeal to all audiences.

Produced by Essop Khan and Mohamed Ali Jamal Syndrome looks at the resulting chaos when the son of a traditional Indian family arrives with his bride, a young white woman. The bride’s wealthy parents provide a tuckshop as a dowry but the young man has ideas of his own!

Featuring Essop and Mohamed as well as well-known actress Savi Ramsay, the show introduces new performers Teakshania Chetty and Katinga Busarello. Some 60 performances of the season have already been booked as fundraisers by sporting, cultural and religious bodies.

Performances start at the Pattundeen Theatre Aryan Benevolent Home on February 29 and March 1 at 20h00. A matinee at the Durga Hall in Mobeni Heights on March 2 at 15h00 will be hosted by Mobeni Heights Women’s Forum. Tickets available at Ideals in Chatsworth Centre.

Organisations wanting to host the play to raise funds can contact Mohamed Ali at 031 902 4515 or 083 982 2362.
