RETURN OF DE COMPLEAT HSTRY OF DBN (article first published : 2008-02-15)

De Compleat Hstry of Dbn… Without the Boring Bits, which had a successful run at the Catalina Theatre over the festive season, received such interest from public and schools that the season has been brought back to cater for additional demand.

Rumour has it that one Christmas Day, on his voyages away from his nagging wife and a persistent tax man, Vasco de Gama named what was to become Durban, “Porto Natalia”. The irreverent potted history seeks to tell the stories behind the historical facts, lightly peppered with occasional ditties, parodies and traditional songs from the city’s earliest history until today.

The piece is inspired by the Reduced Shakespeare Company’s The Compleat Wrks of Wlm Shkspr (Abridged) during which the cast irreverently, yet accurately, gallop through the works of the Bard.

Director Themi Venturas has used this approach, transposing it to the history behind the history of Durban – looking at watershed events and crucial personalities in the city’s history. The story starts with why Vasco de Gama left Portugal in the first place; the first major floods in Durban and what shows were put on by the Theatre Royal (which was the first theatre in Durban). The content is accurate and factual and indeed looks at important milestones in the city’s past – but avoids the boring bits…!

Suitable for the whole family, the comedy also looks at the different ways in which history is interpreted – for example we meet Milly the Elephant from Mitchell Park and follow her story on the History Channel; SABC All Africa Channel and Eastern Mosaic – to see various culturally different interpretations of the same event.

Playing a multitude of roles are Hamish Kyd, Frank Graham, Mabel Mthombeni, Holly Boulind and Kajal Bagwandeen (Chalo Cinema, Bombay Crush) who alternates with Mayuri Naidu (Sasol Fever). Funky larger than life cartoon-like costumes are designed and created by Hugo le Roux and Jannie Engelbrecht. Music is by Themi Venturas and Tiki Nxumalo, and the time-line backdrop cartoon is created by Ewok. (See review in Drama archives)

“Durbanites are, at best, not particularly knowledgeable about Durban’s history, so we thought it was an appropriate time to have a look at our story – especially in the context of all the name changing, etc,” says Themi Venturas. “Once we take a look at our past, we realise that a lot of what is happening today has happened before – we have covered similar ground before and are not facing changes necessarily for the first time.”

De Compleat Hstry of Dbn ….Without the Boring Bits is suitable for the whole family and runs at Catalina Theatre in Wilson’s Wharf from March 3 to 15.

There are performances for school audiences at 11h00 from Tuesday to Friday with further performances at 20h00 on Friday and Saturday (Sunday at 18h00). While Monday is usually an off-day in the theatre industry, there is a performance at 11h00 on March 10.

Tickets R75 (R30 per pupil; R45 adults; pensioners and students). For every ten pupils there is one free ticket for the teacher (morning shows only). Bookings on 031 305 6889.
