BOMBSTYLE (article first published : 2008-01-11)

The lyrical Bombstyle follows the previous Do What I Please Productions of One Mind, One Mouth, One Mic and Spitfire: The Return Of The Red-I, the final in the trilogy written by Iain Ewok Robinson who has garnered a tremendous following as a result. His forte is rap and this is the style of Bombstyle which received a very appreciative reception from the packed, mostly young, audience.

Good and entertaining it might be, but it tended to be very repetitive in all its aspects, from Ewok bursting on stage in the opening scene to justify the piece, the voice-over in the darkened theatre which followed, the sound of which was slightly distorted due to the microphone being too close and the over-long video projection, well photographed as it might have been, and Iain Robinson as the terrorist assembling his suicide bomb.

The play improved with Liam Magner, the other actor in the two-hander, on his cellphone taking one call after another. He is responsible for the security of the housing complex and declaims most forcefully the graffiti artists who should reserve their writings to text messages. The play is, however, still very repetitive, as befits the rap style. The acting and delivery are excellent, and the protest is delivered well - the problems still remain and there is still the cry for change. The play is directed by Libby Allen.

There is one further production of Bombstyle at Kwasuka Theatre on January 11 at 20h00. A full house can be expected. Maurice Kort
