ALADDIN (article first published : 2007-11-14)

After previous successful traditional end of year pantomimes, Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty, Kickstart continues its commitment to Durban family audiences with Aladdin.

Aladdin will be staged in the Playhouse Drama Theatre, in association with the Playhouse Company. Set in mystical Ancient China, the panto package features a flying carpet, an enormous Genie of the Lamp, a Willow Pattern Finale and sparkling Cave of Wonders full of jewels and dragons as well as all the old panto favourites: popular songs, classic jokes, messy slosh scenes and sing-a-longs to delight young and old.

Headed by Steven Stead, who has adapted, written and directed Aladdin, the production is created and presented by a multi-award winning cast and design crew and promises a sumptuous, magical production with innovative designs by Greg King.

Carol Trench, star of last yearís My Fair Lady, takes the title role of Aladdin. She will be supported by Darren King as the wicked magician Abanazar; Peter Court as Aladdinís addled mother Widow Twankey; Bryan Hiles as Wishee Washee, and Ntando Cele as the sultry Genie of the Ring. Frances Currie makes her KickstArt debut as Aladdinís sweetheart, the Princess Jasmine, while Danielle Perlman is her spunky sidekick, Dar Ling. Adding to the scale of the production is a talented all-singing, all-dancing chorus.

Choreography is by Josette Eales with musical direction by Evan Roberts. Steven Stead and Greg King were responsible for both of last yearís highly successful festive season productions: My Fair Lady and Sleeping Beauty.

Aladdin runs in the Playhouse Drama from November 21 to December 30, with shows from Tuesday to Saturday at 14h30 with evening shows on Friday and Saturday at 19h00 and Sunday performances at 15h00. There will be no show on either Christmas Day or Boxing Day but there will be a show on Christmas Eve (although the Playhouse is normally closed on a Monday) at 14h30. Tickets R80 (R65 children). Book through Computicket.
