RUSSELL PETERS COMEDY FESTIVAL (article first published : 2007-11-9)

Described as “Hysterical” Canadian comedian Russell Peters, he performed to Durban audiences on October 17 and 18 at the Durban Expo Centre.

The Russell Peters Comedy Festival began with recorded snippets on a big screen of the Peters’ family. Peters’ mom described him as a hyperactive child. His dad said that Russell always saw the bright side of things. His parents failed to talk about his knack of humiliating members of his audience.

I found this Canadian comedian far from hysterical but more a “joke of a comedian”. Our very own South African comedians viz, Mark Lottering, Mark Banks and Michael Naicker to name a few, would give Russell Peters a run for his money. South African comedians interact with their audience on a “funny but not personal level”.

It appeared like the production had no structure, so it was “pick on audience night”.

Russell Peters got too personal with audience members. During his rude and derogatory “fun –run” his “victims” were shown on the big screen. I hope he, or his agent had the decency to apologise to the audience members he had offended, viz the teenager he was sexually inviting, the bank clerk, the muslim/white couple and the man he called “Jesus”.

Russell Peters, if that was your idea of an evening of hysterical comedy, then you have a lot to learn from South African comedians. – Pauline Dalais
