WOMEN OF MUD (article first published : 2000-10-1)

Madcaps Theatre Company’s new production Women of Mud will appear in the A Slice of Madness (see Festivals) month-long celebration of the performing arts at Kwasuka Theatre during October.

A play for adult audiences, Women of Mud, is devised, scripted, directed and performed by Wendy Nell and Gisele Turner. An original two-hander, it highlights core issues in the lives of two mature women on the threshold of self-discovery. A deceptively simple plot sees Louise and Grail on a vision quest in which the real, the imagined and the unimaginable are subtly intertwined.

As layer after layer is exposed, the women are compelled to face themselves, each other, their fears and their dreams. Woven into the play is a humorous and energetic modern mythology that tracks the course of a relationship highlighting gender issues as Grail and Louise make an intriguing journey into the unknown and emerge triumphant and humbled.

Women of Mud had its debut performance at Not The Grahamstown Festival at the Durban High School in June, and was well received at The Standard Bank Arts Festival 2000 in Grahamstown.

Women of Mud can be seen on October 6 (19h00), October 15 (18h30), October 21 (19h00) and October 26 (19h00). Tickets R25 (R20 pensioners, students and block bookings) at Computicket or at Kwasuka Theatre on (031) 309-2236 or email: whdevcp@icon.co.za
