MONDIG (article first published : 2007-10-1)

After 21 years as comedian, entertainer and a sharp and witty human being, Casper De Vries is still on top of his career. His latest show, Mondig, had audiences in stitches at Sibaya’s iZulu Theatre. People flocked in from as far as Margate in the South and Vryheid in the North to share in De Vries’ celebration of 21 years in the entertainment industry. It is not often that Durban and KZN Afrikaans audiences get to be entertained in the colourful indigenous Afrikaans.

Taking audiences on a nostalgic rollercoaster ride from the early 90’s to present day, De Vries uses his colourful career as backdrop to comment on social issues in a fresh and hilarious way. However, nothing in the show is egocentric, something which it could easily have been. It simply is the intelligent lunacy De Vries has become known for, presented as an energetic and brilliant experience. His transformations into the various characters are astounding.

Clever use of four large TV screens on stage reflecting on known images and video inserts compliments and ensures never a dull moment. The Leon Schuster insert, however, was contrived and uncomfortable and certainly not necessary. De Vries outshines any comedian in South Africa. His enormous talent as performer is evident and his comfortable and mature comedy timing should be studied by many a stand-up comedian.

How wonderful to see a truly talented actor exploring his every bit of skill as a comedy entertainer. It is not only about his writing, his sweet cuddly posture or his expressive face; it simply is the complete use of the total make-up of an enormously talented man.

Did I mention that I am now suffering from severe stomach muscle pain? Never have I laughed as much. - Thomie Holtzhausen
