DEATH OF KETAN LAKHANI (article first published : 2007-09-29)

Ketan Lakhani, one of Durban’s well-known media and theatre personalities, died of a heart attack at the age of 52 in the early hours of this morning (September 29). He was at home in his bed and had been watching television, the remote control close by.

“He had been suffering ill-health over the last two or three days,” says close friend, arts publicist Illa Thompson,” and he had had heart problems for some time but, being Ketan, always thought he’d get the better of it. He seemed to have gone peacefully and his face was unmarked by pain.”

Ketan Lakhani has been an actor, director, writer, television personality, critic and columnist over the years and was one of Durban’s most colourful personalities. He did his degree and honours at the University of Durban-Westville (now UKZN Westville campus).

“He was one of the brightest students we’ve had, “says former UDW lecturer Robin Singh, “He was also an English student, always highly articulate and very widely read. In his days of writing for the newspapers he was highly provocative in his column and raised the hackles of the established theatre personalities of that time - which was probably his aim in the first place! He was a very close and dear friend. We will miss him.”
