PLAYHOUSE AUDITIONS (article first published : 2007-09-28)

The Playhouse Company will hold auditions for its forthcoming production of Gcina Mhlophe’s African Mother Christmas to be performed in the Playhouse Loft from December 19 to 30.

This enchanting story theatre production will feature the internationally acclaimed writer and storyteller herself as the show’s Narrator, along with a cast of eleven. Auditions to cast these roles in the show will be held on October 6 between 14h00 and 18h00, in Room AI, at the Playhouse Company’s Administration building at 29 Acutt Street in Durban.

African Mother Christmas was born out of a need to have a story that is ours,” says Gcina Mhlophe. “It is based in our own way of the life, the starting point being the culture we come from, it depicts the kind of celebrations we had in the not so distant past.”

Roles to be cast include: Mother Christmas, in her early 30s, petite and a great dancer who knows how to bring light and joy to any celebration; Buntu, a 13 year old boy, gentle, diligent, inquisitive; Thando,11 years old and playful, she loves to laugh and is light footed as her mother’s helper in the house; Mama, tall, hard working, she enjoys her role as home maker; Baba (a big man who takes pride in being a good father); Gogo, 70 year old woman with a good approach to storytelling; Shop Owner, a keen business man making the most of Festival Season buying; Musician/Comedian, 40s, spontaneous, he plays various African instruments; Neighbour 1, 35 years of age, she loves children and is close to Thando and Buntu’s family; Neighbour 2, a retired school principal, he is called Teacher Mazibuko or simply “Sir” by many of his ex-students.

The auditions are for qualified, professional and experienced actors. The ability to dance and sing will be advantageous to candidates. Audition material in the form of a monologue and songs is available at the Playhouse Company Stage Door. Applicants may also bring their own material if suitable. The booking times to secure audition slots are September 28 between 15h00 and 16h00, and October 3 between 15h00 and 16h00 only. Candidates may book once, and no-one may book after the dates stipulated. To book an audition, call 031 369 9464.
