ANIMAL FARM (article first published : 2007-09-13)

Opening on September 18 on the Pietermaritzburg campus of the UKZN is the re-imagined Animal Farm by George Orwell, adapted by prominent British theatre director Peter Hall in the 1980s, and featuring the musical score of Adrian Mitchell and Richard Peaslee.

The story follows a successful revolution by animals on a typical English farm, and shows how absolute power ultimately corrupts. Although this original setting is retained, audiences will draw parallels to other political contexts, including South Africa.

Under the direction of Veronica Baxter with musical direction by John McGuinness, the barnyard is filled with music and fabulously designed animals in what George Orwell called a ‘fairy story’. The students of Drama and Performance Studies on the Pietermaritzburg campus of UKZN breathe new life into the widely known classic, using innovative design of puppets and masks by Mbongeni Mtshali and Jackie Keevy.

The cast is made up of mostly undergraduate students of Drama and Performance Studies, who have also made all the masks and puppets themselves and assisted in all the stages of design of space, actor, lighting and media. The production is designed to be a hands-on experience for students of theatre.

The play script and lyrics are truthful to the original Orwell novel and therefore will assist high school pupils who are studying the text.

Animal Farm runs from September 18 to 20 nightly at 19h30 at the Hexagon Theatre. Tickets R30 (R25 students and seniors) available at the door. Block bookings are possible through the Hexagon Theatre on 033 260 5537. There is safe parking behind the theatre.
