THUNDERHEAD COMEDY CLUB (article first published : 2007-09-2)

Comedy in KZN has a new home with the ThunderHEAD Comedy Club brand. Morningside, Glenwood, Hillcrest, Scottburgh and Pietermaritzburg all now have regular monthly comedy evenings promoted by Splittingskulls PR and GRRiTmagazine.

The project is the brainchild of pioneering promoter and dexterous stand-up comedian Glen Bo who brought the East Coast Radio Comedy Invasion tours to the Playhouse and Sibaya Casino in 2005 and 2006. Since returning home to South Africa for a planned year, he has already performed and hosted comedy at Splashy Fen, staged his solo show in Westville and Botha’s Hill and been booked for ETV’s Let’s fix it for a Charity Fundraiser.

He has been working with a group of five new comedians, developing their material, giving them pointers and creating a comedy circuit where they can showcase their skills. Owners of Thunder Road Rock Diners have also put their weight behind the clubs and there is now a circuit of five regular evenings. Cape Town and Jo’burg based stand-ups will also have the opportunity to get to Durban more often as will international acts on tour from the UK and US.

ThunderHEAD offers Stand-up and Improv. Stand-up focuses on spoken comedy, depending on the venue, and reflects a mix of new, developmental and established material. Improv is like the Who’s line is it anyway comedy games. ThunderHEAD Comedy Clubs bookings for September include:

September 1 at ThunderHEAD@SpeakEasy Cocktail Lounge at the Summersands Mall, Marine Parade, Scottburgh. Stand-up from host: Lil Paul, featuring Jason Fiddler, Matthew Savides and headliner Glen Bo. In the second half there is “Impov” games with all the comedians.

September 4 at ThunderHEAD@Scaramooshe, Old, Main Road, Hillcrest. Stand-up hosted by Glen Bo, featuring material from his solo show My Nirvana with Mattew Savides, Jan Badenhorst and Lil’ Paul.

September 6 at ThunderHEAD@Thunder Road Rock Diner, 136 Florida Road, Morningside. Stand-up & IMPROV featuring Dave Campbell, Jason Fiddler, Jan Badenhorst, Matthew Savides, Glen Bo and Lil’Paul. An evening of “Improv” games like “Who’s line is it anyway”.

September 8 at ThunderHEAD@Pizzetta in Davenport Road, Glenwood. Stylish stand-up comedy, with a show plus dinner: Matthew “eye-liner” Savides, Lil’Paul Jason “I’m fantastic” Fiddler and MC international-globe-trotting stand-up Glen Bo.

September 15 at The Red Door in Pietermaritzburg. Stand-up & IMPROV line-up hosted by Glen Bo with Matthew Savides, Jan Badenhorst and Lil’ Paul.

In all cases, the doors open at 19h00 with the show at 20h00. Duration of the shows is approximately two hours including intervals. Full bars are available with complementary snacks or full menu on offer, depending on the venue. With the price dependent on the show, tickets are R30 to R50 (R25 students & members) at the door. Tickets R30 online at www.stricklytickets.com or via ‘facebook’ (search for ’ThunderHEAD Comedy Group’) Bookings are essential as there is limited table seating.

For October bookings and for info on how to book stand-up comedy or “improv” at your event, function or team-building contact Tyler on splittingskulls@gmail.com or call 076 788 5847. GRRiTmagazine proudly supports original stand-up comedy and rock music. www.grrit.co.za / www.myspace.com/lovetheGRRiT
