FOR FACTS SAKE (article first published : 2000-09-20)

Anyone expecting to be in Cape Town in November should make a date in their diary to see Pieter-Dirk Uys’s newest show For Facts Sake. First seen at the Standard Bank National Arts Festival in Grahamstown in July where it was extremely well-received, the show is a distillation of his efforts to work with schools to prevent AIDS through education. For Facts Sake will have a short run of seven performances only at the Baxter Theatre in Cape Town.

In For Facts Sake, Pieter-Dirk Uys takes his audiences into the new minefield of terror and death where sex – “and not apartheid or politics” - provides the major threat to humanity. “AIDS is the most democratic reality in South Africa today: it takes no sides,” says Pieter-Dirk Uys. “We are suddenly all united in our fear of dying of love. And we can laugh at our fear and put it into perspective. For Facts Sake takes the facts that frighten us and puts them into the fiction they belong. It hangs the urban legends on the walls with the other cartoons of life and underlines the reality that if we’re not careful we will all be dead. Perhaps laughter can keep us alive!”

Uys uses his chorus line of Felicia, Madiba, Nowell Fine, Bambi Kellermann and at last, Thabo Mbeki with a host of new characters to keep the facts riveting. (See review in this section). Performances take place in the Baxter Theatre on October 31 at 20h00 and in the Baxter Concert Hall on November 1, 2 and 3 at 18h30 and 21h00.

Booking is at Computicket.
