DEATH OF RAD THUMBADOO (article first published : 2007-08-19)

A well-known theatre personality and English teacher in the days of apartheid, Ruthnum “Rad” Thumbadoo died in Durban recently.

In an article in the Daily News (August 13, 2007), his son Kolin Thumbadoo states that his father “used theatre to instil and provoke resistance, and he remains a hero to the family and those who knew him.” Kolin was further reported as saying that while his father appreciated theatre as a means of entertainment, he also recognised its powerful capacity to raise consciousness among people.

Born in Durban, Rad Thumbadoo matriculated from Sastri College and went on to study for a degree – and later an honours degree - in English at the then Natal University. During the 1950’s he appeared in productions such as Shakuntala, The Dam (Mukhthadara), King of the Dark Chamber, Hassan, The Merchant of Venice, Noah and Oliver.
