KWA MANDINA (article first published : 2007-08-19)

Kwa Mandina is a workshop production by the UKZN Drama students directed by leading South African performer Gcina Mhlophe who is well-known for her work as a storyteller, actress and author.

This semester, Gcina Mhlophe has joined the Drama and Performance Studies programme as a guest director to create a workshop play with second and third year students. She has substantial experience having been involved in workshop theatre with Barney Simon at the Market Theatre during the 1980s. She will bring these skills to the Kwa Mandina project.

This is a story with many faces and voices. The family of Mandina is going through a very challenging time in their lives. Their parents have passed on and the oldest son is trying to remind them of the powerful legacy they left behind. Their family heritage will hold them together. As a large extended family they are working hard to uplift one another as well as drawing friends and colleagues to their uniquely magnetic rhythm. Even those who stray, find themselves longing for the central fireplace and the meals cooked with great love. If the Mandinas were a quilted blanket, they would be so colourful, multi layered and multi textured, you would wish to wrap yourself in its joyous warmth!

In Kwa Mandina, Gcina Mhlophe has worked with a diverse group of students to create a play that draws on the studentsí life experiences. Performances take place in the Square Space Theatre from August 29 to September 1 at 19h00. Tickets R30 (R15 students). Bookings through Ms Wagner on 031 260 3133.
