PASSING THROUGH (article first published : 2007-08-10)

Directed by Iain “Ewok” Robinson, Passing Through is a new one-hander about five women working the night shift at the Mariannhill Toll Road Plaza. The production runs at the Kwasuka Cutting Edge Theatre and all characters are performed by Libby Allen.

This is the latest in a series of new contemporary South African works from the same team that produced One Mind; One Mouth; One Mic (Audience Choice Award MUSHO! 2006) and Spitfire (Audience Choice Award and Pick of the Festival Trophy MUSHO! 2007) as well as Ladies And Gents and The Onus Chronicles.

Having just received her Masters Degree from UKZN with the completion of her first novel, writer and actress Elizabeth “Libby” Allen takes centre stage in this one-woman show that takes audiences behind the glass windows of the Mariannhill Toll Plaza outside Pinetown.

Conceptualised and written by Libby and her father Tim Allen, Passing Through is another example of how Durban continues to produce new, relevant work for the stage amongst a constant deluge of supper theatre and review shows.

Libby Allen paces her way through the routines and personalities of five women working the late night shift at The Plaza. All of these women exist within the same shell, contained by the same time and space, inside the same small booths while the world literally passes them by.

“So if our world is one in which we are constantly passing through,” say the writers, “then what sort of lives does it take to make up a world that is in balance? This is an introduction to those lives, the ones that provide the counterweight to our constant motion, the ones behind the till points, behind the teller windows, behind the petrol pumps.”

Passing Through runs at Kwasuka Cutting Edge Theatre from August 16 to 26 from Thursdays to Sundays at 19h00 (no shows Monday to Wednesday). There is a cash bar, hotdogs, popcorn and breyani on offer. The theatre is situated at 53 Stamford Hill Road, Greyville (entrance in Kent Road).

Bookings on 084 843 0055 or at the Catalina on 031 305 6889. More information on email kwasuka@gmail.com
