NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. The Playhouse Company is currently devising its artistic plans for 2008/9 and invites arts practitioners to submit for consideration proposals for stage productions in the areas of dance, drama and music. The deadline for submissions has now been extended to August 10, 2007. Proposals must be for productions that are ready to be staged and not in concept phase or basic script only. Work must be of a high artistic standard. (Fully cast, rehearsed and previously performed productions will be given preference?). Proposals are welcomed in one or more of the following categories: Schools programme – education and development productions geared for schools audiences. These include dramatisations of matric set works, both in first language and secondary language categories, and also productions with a general life-skills content geared for senior primary school audiences. South African Women’s Arts Festival – gender sensitive productions that are written, performed or directed by women in the fields of music, dance, drama or poetry, or projects in fields such as photography whose content relates to the above mentioned categories of the performing arts. hip kulcha programme – productions that aim to uplift or motivate the outlook of youth, that include elements of skills transfer, or that provide a safe space for youth issues to be debated. New Stages – productions that reflect the creative ethos of the New South Africa, highlighting the best of our artistic and cultural heritage. Following a review process of up to three months, successful applicants will notified and given appropriate use of Playhouse Company’s venues for rehearsals , remuneration for performances for artists including the director, writer and choreographers (where applicable). The standard cost of Playhouse theatre hire charges will be waived. Further ‘in-kind’ benefits will include basic stage, lighting and sound facilities, and administrative support. PLH will offer some marketing support for the successful chosen productions. A limited number of productions are selected each year. Application forms are available from Playhouse Company’s head office Arts dept, situated on First Floor, 29 Acutt Street, Durban, or by e-mail at arts@playhousecompany.com More information on 031 369 9463/4/7.
