THE TEMPEST (article first published : 2007-07-20)

An exciting new production of Shakespeare's The Tempest will run at the Hexagon Theatre in Pietermaritzburg from August 1 to 5.

The production will feature well-known professional actor Stephen Gurney, who Durban audiences will remember well from his days with the Natal Performing Arts Council (NAPAC now The Playhouse Company) in the role of Prospero and a cast of students from the University of KwaZulu Natal as well as Indiana University in the USA. The play is directed by Murray McGibbon, former Director of Drama for NAPAC and The Playhouse Company, and now Professor of Theatre and Drama at Indiana University in America.

Murray McGibbon has chosen to set the play on an imaginary island off the coast of South Africa. "Together with the cast and designers, we have striven to find contemporary resonances in the play which will ring true to modern audiences," he says.

The production will be staged in-the-round and features costume designs by Mbo Mtshali, a Master's student in Drama and Performance Studies at UKZN, and lighting by the Hexagon's Marcus Henning. A special feature of the production is live music and sound composed by Snethemba Makanya and Carmund White.

"The production is fresh, exciting and fun," says McGibbon. "I am hoping that it will appeal to Shakespearean scholars as well as the average theatre-goer."

The Tempest runs in the Hexagon Theatre on the University of KwaZulu-Natal Pietermaritzburg Campus from August 1 to 5 with performances from Wednesday to Satuday at 19h30 (Sunday at 14h30). Tickets R40 (R30 students & seniors). Bookings on 033 260 5537 or e-mail hexagon@ukzn.ac.za
