PROF. VAYALA VASUDEVAN PILLAI WORKSHOP (article first published : 2007-07-17)

The International Centre on Non-Violence (ICON) and Satyagraha (In Pursuit of Truth), an alternate media based on Gandhi’s ideals) is to present an enlightening workshop on July 17.

The workshop will be presented in collaboration with the Department of Arts, Culture and Tourism (KZN) and the Department of Drama of the Durban University of Technology. The keynote speaker will be Professor Vayala Vasudevan Pillai and the workshop will focus on Indian Theatre – Traditional, Colonial and the Present In common with Third World Countries and Reviving Community Theatre.

Prof V V Pillai (62) has had theatre training in Rome University, Italy in 1980 and was a Fulbright Fellow in New York University in 1989. He taught Indian theatre and studied Japanese theatre in Meiji University, Tokyo in 1996 and was also a UGC visiting Professor in Paris 8 University, in 2001.

He was financed by I.C.C.R.- New Delhi for participation in the Ibsen Conference in Norway and has also conducted a number of theatre workshops in and outside of India. His accomplishments and knowledge of the Theatre Arts is much broader than the few milestones mentioned here. In South Africa to present a paper at the Annual Conference of the International Federation of Theatre Researchers to be held in Stellenbosch, he has kindly made himself available to conduct a workshop in Durban, where he could impart his theatre knowledge to the local arts communities in KZN.

The workshop will take place on July 17 from 13h00 to 15h00 (refreshments and finger lunch provided) at the Courtyard Theatre, Durban University of Technology (Mansfield Campus).
