CHRONICLES OF A CAR GUARD (article first published : 2007-07-3)

MacBob Productions unveils its latest stage show, Chronicles of a Car Guard starring award winning Durban actress Lisa Bobbert, at the National Arts Festival.

Here Lisa forsakes her glamorous stage persona to explore a phenomenon of present day life many of us prefer to ignore: the ubiquitous car guard. True to form, this mistress of the stage infuses the world of comedy with the darker colours of life in her new show, which is written and directed by Susan Monteregge.

Lisa Bobbert is Delphine, a Durban car guard who has decided that she is important enough to chronicle those parts of her life that have lead to her to the success she enjoys today. She is happily employed and loving her financial independence but she has had to work hard to achieve her status in society.

South Africans have become accustomed to these car park security people that offer a service that some interpret as begging. Delphine is aware of this but will put you straight on some key differences when it comes to duties and conditions of employment. Is she hilarious or tragic? We don't know. We usually have to pay a two rand or five rand coin in order to make that question go away. If we are feeling generous we might part with a note, and feel the virtue of our generosity, but the question will stay the same.

“So part with some bucks,” says Lisa. “Delphine’s working up a cabaret sweat, running after your car in case you leave the Grahamstown car park without seeing her. It's all Sun Factor 30, hats and night glo waistcoat splendour. It's the entertaining truth and she's going to give it to you 'shtraight'.”

Chronicles of a Car Guard can be seen at the Scout Hall in Grahamstown. See festival programme for dates and times.
