DE KRUIK (article first published : 2007-06-29)

Following the international successes of Freebirds (2002/2003) and Vuka! Vuka! (Wake up) (2005) Het Waterhuis returns to South Africa in June 2007 with Kruik, a remake of the 1999 show De Kruik which Het Waterhuis performed in Holland, Belgium and Morocco.

Take a Truck driver, a Wandering Woman, a large stone Jar containing Medicine and Situations that are not quite what they seem and you have the ingredients that make up Kruik.

A large stone jar stands on the back of a small truck. The jar contains a medicine that is supposedly effective against all disasters and illnesses of the time. Well, that is according to the man who drives the truck. This man, with a shady past, preaches and lectures that his medicine will save all young people from the evils of crime. Then the jar breaks. But luckily there is a woman who can help him to mend the jar. But … is she really just a woman?

Based on a one-act play by Pirandello, Kruik is an unpredictable and hilarious comedy of tensions, misunderstandings and confrontations.

With a cast of two actors from different cultural backgrounds, South African actor Dumisile Mqadi and Dutch actor Matthieu Güthschmidt, a script (English) by Kees van Loenen and the expert direction of artistic director Roel Twijnstra, Kruik promises a unique outdoor theatrical experience. Dumisile Mqadi and Matthieu Güthschmidt come into their own with their handling of the flighty and funny situations that arise in this bubbly comedic farce.

Kruik will be appearing at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown before moving on to King Williamstown and then to Cape Town. Admission to all performances is free.

The South African tour of Kruik was made possible through the co-operation of Shivulari Lakeside Lodge (Elim, Limpopo), Ndlovu Medical Centre, Impilisweni Woodlands, Artscape (Cape Town), National Arts Festival Grahamstown, the Royal Netherlands Embassy, Pretoria, OXFAM, the Dutch ministry of Foreign Affairs and HIVOS.

Het Waterhuis (The Waterhouse), a Rotterdam based, professional youth theatre company was founded in 1995. It travels around the world with open-air performances. Under the management of artistic director Roel Twijnstra Het Waterhuis presents performances that are both poignant and confrontational but are also thrilling and humorous. Talent, technical skills, video, music and dance all combine in producing innovative and ground breaking theatre performances. Visit www.hetwaterhuis.nl for details.
