THE PEG LEG PIRATE (article first published : 2007-06-18)

Just in time for the July school holidays is The Peg Leg Pirate - an interactive children’s play which comes to the Catalina Theatre from July 3 to 14 from the same team who presented The Faraway Forest.

The play is about Frazzlefoot, the pretend pirate who steals the carefully-hidden birthday presents from Christabel the pixie. She was keeping them as a surprise for her friend. She then asks the bumbling super-hero Tiddlewinks to help her to guard the presents and then find them once they are stolen. Together with the Grumblewumps they set out to catch the thief.

The show features the same team as The Faraway Forest and follows a similar storyline. It is directed by Koobeshen Naidoo who has appeared in 4 Ding-A-Lings And A Ding, To House; Dr Marie; Comedy Shop and Beyond Calvary. He also directs and writes for radio drama.

The Faraway Forest is written by Kumseela Naidoo. The cast features drama teacher and father of three Henry Ramkissoon who made his debut in 4 Ding-A-Lings And A Ding. He also writes and appeared in the Lotus FM radio drama - SA Law.

Kumseela Naidoo has taken part in numerous productions like 4 Ding-A-Lings And A Ding; A Cookie in the Kitchen; There's something about Dr Marie and Comedy Shop. She is a drama teacher and took the lead role in SA Law. Nirvana Naidoo is a mother of four and is also a school drama teacher. Completing the cast is veteran comic actor Vivian Moodley who was most recently seen in Indian with an Attitude at the Musho theatre festival in January and regularly appears in drama series on Lotus FM.

The Peg Leg Pirate deals with issues like helping others, saving the environment, not cheating, lying and stealing. The show has already performed to children’s homes and has been excellently received. The characters’ united vision overcomes their individual differences in a lively adventure with lots of interactive moments and songs.

The Peg Leg Pirate runs at Catalina Theatre on Wilson’s Wharf from July 3 to 14 at 11h00 (except Monday). Tickets R45 include a harbour boat ride (R30 show only). The show runs at 55 minutes with no interval. To book call Thandeka on 031 305 6889.
