PINOCCHIO (article first published : 2007-06-18)

The much loved story of Pinocchio is being adapted for stage as a magical multi-disciplinary production for the whole family which comes to the Kwasuka Cutting Edge Theatre from July 5.

Pinocchio takes audiences to a place where magical illusions, dance drama and puppetry combine to explore the story of a ‘blockhead’ puppet who develops into a real boy. The cast of dancers and actors is headed by Adam Doré as Pinocchio and Adi Paxton as Fairy.

Adapted from Carlo Collodi’s classic Pinocchio story this production provides a fresh look at the familiar by using magical illusions and dance to enhance the storytelling. Adi Paxton A.K.A Cherry the Magical Clown and dancer Quinton Ribbonaar have collaborated with upcoming young performers to explore different techniques. The idea is that everyone would grow and develop from the experience.

Adi Paxton is a seasoned children’s performer who has presented many solo productions and collaborations in the past aimed at family audiences: appearing at the Hilton Arts Festival, on the Main programme at Grahamstown National Arts Festival (2004) and International Puppet Festivals (touring to Germany and Austria withAfrican Fables (2001) and Pet’s Tale (2004) as well as in the Botanic Gardens. Quinton Ribbonaar has performed locally and internationally and is well known for his work with the Fantastic Flying Fish Dance Company. He was recently seen in Raze at Kwasuka Theatre presented by the new dance company X-Hibit 37.

In December 2007, Adi and Quinton collaborated on a project aimed at working with and developing young performers as well as exploring the interweaving of their respective skills. The result is Pinocchio which they promise is a rollicking family show that will awake the child in all of us.

Many of the young cast, all UKZN and DUT graduates, have appeared professionally in numerous productions over the past year or two. The ensemble cast includes S’thembiso Blose, Kerry Holbrook, Clinton Small, Ntokozo Mthethwa and Candice Daniels. Adam Doré has worked for the Playhouse Company, Actors’ Cooperative and others while Mthethwa has toured internationally with African Footprint and has just returned from dancing in London. The show is choreographed by Quinton Ribbonaar and directed by Adi Paxton.

The show is suitable for ages 4 to 104! Come and enjoy an hour of fun and fantasy with interactive audience participation.

Produced by Cherryco, Pinocchio runs at Kwasuka Cutting Edge Theatre from July 5 to 15 at 11h00 on weekdays and Saturday and Sunday performances at 14h00. Tickets R50 (R25 children and pensioners) booked through 031 305 6889 or www.strictlytickets.com

N.B. Due to the Durban July there will be no show on July 7 but there will be an extra show on July 13 at 14h00)
