PRODIGAL (article first published : 2007-05-27)

Prodigal, the hit show by director Dani Marais and playwright Lorraine Knox, will be showing at the Kwasuka Cutting Edge Theatre from May 30.

Featuring multi-talented Tim Redpath, the show played an extended run to packed houses and standing ovations at the Grahamstown National Arts Festival in 2006 as well as extended runs at Rhodes University, the Witness Hilton Festival, and the Unisa Festival of Languages. It played more recently at NSA’s Festival of Fame.

A neatly plotted and superbly written classic for the modern age; Prodigal follows the tale of a young Eastern Cape farm boy as he decides to leave home and seek out his fortunes in the racy and faced-paced city of Johannesburg.

Snappy dialogue, split-second character changes, strong physical acting as well as exciting and innovative directing, help one man bring a fantastic cast of characters to life.

From a storytelling Eastern Cape Xhosa woman to a dodgy Middle-Eastern restaurant owner named Joe, Redpath’s vocal dexterity takes audiences on a rollercoaster journey through this timeless drama filled with pride, rejection and sacrifice.

Prodigal runs from May 30 to June 3 at 19h00 (Sundays at 18h00). Tickets R50 (R25 students and pensioners). Tickets at the door or to book contact 031 305 6889 or visit www.strictlytickets.com
