THE GOVERNMENT INSPECTOR (article first published : 2007-04-30)

Opening on April 30 at 19h00 in the Square Space Theatre on the Howard College Campus of the University of KwaZulu-Natal, is The Government Inspector

Gogol's classic comedy presented by the Drama and Performance Studies department of UKZN highlights issues of government corruption and misuse of power.

The play is set originally in a remote town in Russia, where the great distance from central authority allows for corruption and crime to fester. These ideas are, unfortunately, not too far removed from today's concerns in many countries, including South Africa. Using farcical humour created through language and hilariously neurotic characters, the play explores the blatant misrepresentations of truth and the corruption of government officials and political figures.

The Government Inspector focuses on desperate characters, madly scrambling to hide or disguise the injustices and offences that they have caused, as they respond to the news that the town is soon to be inspected by a government official with potentially disastrous consequences for those holding the reigns of power.

The production is directed by well-known actor, writer and director Rajesh Gopie with students from the Drama and Performance Studies programme. Rajesh Gopie's direction and interpretation of the play pinpoints with ironic, and sometimes frightening, accuracy the connections and parallels between Gogol's 19th century context and the South African panorama of today.
