A GOOD WOMAN (article first published : 2007-04-11)

Written and directed by Morwenna Bosch for the Drama Studies performance module at the University of KwaZulu-Natal Pietermaritzburg, A Good Woman is a multimedia theatre piece that draws upon Japanese Noh and Kabuki Theatre aesthetics and contemporary sensibilities to tell the story of Hongxue, a young Chinese woman.

The story has been adapted from a collection of true stories about Chinese women's lives in Communist and present day China. Students taking the module perform using puppetry, ensemble work and music to tell Hongxue's story, as it is recalled by the journalist Xinran. The story is used as a platform for exploring issues of gender and power, loss and hope.

A Good Woman runs at the Hexagon Studio Theatre from April 19 to 21. Performances Thursday and Friday at 17h30 and on Saturday at 12h00. Tickets R15 at the door booked through the Hexagon Theatre Office on 033 260 5537 or visit www.hexagon.ukzn.ac.za
