TIN BUCKET DRUM (article first published : 2007-04-3)

Weaving together magical realism, shadow play, mime and live percussion, Tin Bucket Drum follows the story of Nomvula, the Little Drummer Girl. Born into a silent dictatorship with a revolutionary heart-beat, she is soon singled out by the authorities as a 'weapon of mass disturbance'.

Now Nomvula must fight back to claim her rightful place in society and to lift the drought that cripples her village. With the help of a tin bucket, a pair of drumsticks and a defiant heart-beat, the Little Drummer Girl sets out to break the silence!

Directed by Karen Logan, written and conceived by Neil Coppen, Tin Bucket Drum features Ntando Cele with percussive support from Wake Mahlobo. It earned an audience prize at the recent Musho! Theatre Festival.

Tin Bucket Drum runs at Kwasuka Cutting Edge Theatre from April 13 to 29. Tickets R50 (R25 student and pensioners). Performances April 13 to 15 (Buy one get one free).
