TRIBUTE TO GEOFF MACE (article first published : 2000-08-18)

Popular Durban High School teacher Geoff Mace died peacefully at his home recently at the age of 32, his premature demise apparently caused by complications brought about by his diabetic and erratic sugar level condition. Geoff Mace was one of the prime movers for hosting Aldo Brincat’s highly successful annual Not the Grahamstown Festival at DHS and served on the festival committee as liaison for the school.

His funeral was attended by a large number of DHS pupils, their faces all clearly reflecting their sense of shock and loss. The play he had directed for DHS, Notting Hill Gate: The Musical, went ahead and opened on August 15. Its run closed this evening.

The programme notes bear the following tribute. “The entire DHS extended community was stunned by the tragic death of Geoff Mace on August 13. Geoff’s influence throughout the school enriched the lives of countless people, whether it was in the classroom as a gifted English teacher, or the cricket field as a hugely successful coach of the First XI or, in this instance, in the cultural life of the school. His love of drama and music was passed on to all those who had the privilege of working with him.

He loved all the boys and girls who performed so magically under his talented direction. He leaves behind a legacy that will inspire generations to come. He also leaves a hole in the lives of those who knew him well. This musical is a tribute to him. Our deepest sympathies are extended to his family and friends. Rest easy, dear friend.”
