THE SUICIDE KINGS (article first published : 2007-03-25)

The Suicide Kings – about the odds of on-line gambling –was one of the success stories to come out of the Musho theatre festival in January. It will have a run at the newly-upgraded Kwasuka Cutting Edge Theatre from March 28.

A young man is ensnared by the world of Texas Hold ‘Em poker. He is offered the biggest game of his life – but will the stakes be too high? This new South African play looks at the hard-hitting dangers of on-line gambling and is written by Marc Kay who performs in the play with Clinton Small.

Marc Kay is known to Durban audiences as a fine actor and a promising young playwright. What is less known about him is that he is a semi-professional on-line poker player. By his own admission, he thought "Why not combine my two great loves and write a play about poker?”

The result is the very poignant, hilariously funny, tragic and terrifying The Suicide Kings. The play made its debut recently at the Musho! Theatre Festival and was very well received by critics and audience alike. Since Musho, it has been developed, re-written and re-staged for this professional debut season at the Kwasuka Theatre.

The Suicide Kings runs at Kwasuka Cutting Edge Theatre from March 27 to April 8 from Tuesday to Saturday at 20h00 (Sunday at 18h00).

Tickets R50 (R25 students and pensioners) available online at www.strictlytickets.co.za or on our website at www.catalinatheatre.co.za or at www.goingplaces.co.za (Buy One Get One Free on March 28, 29 and 30).

“This comedy is a real winner (an obvious word to use) in terms of the writing and acting, and plot.” (Maurice Kort: artSMart)
