FOOLS AWARDS ARE FIVE (article first published : 2007-03-4)

April Fool's Day is a time for pranks, jokes and light-hearted fun. Historically, in the world of arts and entertainment, ‘the fool’ (as in Shakespeare, commedia and many other ancient performance cultures) is someone who cloaks wise comment in the guise of entertainment or comedy, much as today’s satirists do.

Copy Dog, a Durban-based publicity company, uses the opportunity on April 1 every year to acknowledge the top achievers in the KwaZulu-Natal arts community.

The annual Fools Awards celebrate their Fifth Anniversary this year. The Fools Awards are an opportunity for the public to vote for their favourite movers and shakers in the arts community of KZN, according them the recognition and accolades they deserve.

To mark this special event, Copy Dog has introduced a number of exciting new innovations. These include the creation of a new website - www.copydog.co.za - to make it easy for fans to vote.

Two new classical music categories, Best Male Classical Singer and Best Female Classical Singer, have been added to the list of this year’s Fools Awards.

Online voting is now open. Through a competition being run from the website, you also stand a chance of winning a year’s fabulous entertainment at this year’s Fools Awards.

At rates at R5 per SMS, SMS the following: ART, followed by the name of your artist, eg. “ART, john smith) to 36321.

If you are the lucky winner, you stand to win tickets-for-two to every show open to the public that your chosen artist will appear in over the next year. You also stand the chance to meet your artist at the awards ceremony on April 1 at the Zulu Jazz Lounge.

Part of Durban’s Playhouse complex, this glamorous new entertainment venue is holds special significance for the Fools Awards as this is the spot where the first Fools Awards ceremony was held five years ago. Known then as The Cellar, the area has now been transformed into a superb new entertainment area that is proving to be an ongoing hit with patrons in Durban.

Support artists in KZN by visiting www.copydog.co.za now. The website also offers arts news, reviews and interviews.
