DEATH OF RICHARD WALNE (article first published : 2007-02-26)

Well-known musician, singer/songwriter and former Sunday Tribune sub editor, Richard Walne, died in Cape Town on February 24. He was hospitalised after an accident in the sea at Oudekraal but never recovered.

He will be remembered by Durban audiences for his many performances – the most popular of which was KickstArt’s Table Manners - and his solo gigs at numerous music venues. He was a regular performer at the Durban Folk Club gatherings and had played at every Splashy Fen music festival since its inauguration in 1990.

He also played sets with The Burlesque Supergroup and founded the punk band Tjorb as well as The Jazz Jukebox which still plays regular sets at uShaka Marine World. He has produced many albums, his most recent being Duplicity.

In 2005, he was nominated for a Durban Theatre Award for Sound Design for KickstArt’s Boston Marriage. In the same year, the organisers of Splashy Fen Festival chose Richard and his Burlesque Supergroup to fill their prestigious and much-prized Saturday night ‘showcase’ spot.

The Burlesque Supergroup twice won the Fools Award (2005 and 2006) for Best Contemporary Musical Group. This awards system operates by public vote.
