LIFE'S A PITCH (article first published : 2007-02-18)

Paul Slabolepszy's smash hit comedy about cricket umpires, Life's a Pitch - starring James Borthwick and Graham Hopkins - earned rave reviews nationwide when it opened. It won three FNB Vita Awards - for Best New Script and Best Comedy Performances - and it has received acclaim from many of South Africa's sporting heroes. Umpire Cyril Mitchley's white cap is on permanent loan to the company.

The play has inspired headlines such as: "Life's a Pitch and then you laugh"; "Laugh till you drop" and "Onto a good wicket". This is one of Paul Slabolepszy's funniest plays, with entertainment for both sporting and non-sporting types alike, as it explores well known South African archetypes.

In the words of Mary Jordan of the Business Day: "Both Hopkins and Borthwick are rich, indigenous, comic acts that are emotionally vulnerable, echoing the labyrinthine twists of a five-day test in their leisurely dissection of a game they both love."

Life's a Pitch showcases Slabolepszy's keen character observation and tremendous talent for writing dialogue. This production makes for a most enjoyable evening at the theatre"

“This is a rare theatrical treat for the Hexagon, as both performers studied Drama here at the University (at different times), and it will be delightful to have them back!,” says Peter Mitchell, head of the drama department!

Life's a Pitch runs at the Hexagon Theatre from February 28 to March 3 at 19h30. Tickets R60 (R50 senior citizens and students). Bookings on 033 260 5537 or e-mail hexagon@ukzn.ac.za
