BLOOD ORANGE (article first published : 2007-02-18)

After sell-out performances country-wide where standing ovations were the norm rather than the exception, Blood Orange - one of the highlights of last year's Witness Hilton Arts Festival - returns to Pietermaritzburg for two only performances at the Hexagon.

Based on the novel by Troy Blacklaws and performed by Craig Morris, one of the country's top physical theatre exponents, this is an experience not to be missed by anyone with a love for theatre and story-telling.

This is the story of Gecko, a boy who has an oblique, out-of-synch way of seeing the world. It tells of his childhood among the green hills of Natal and of his jagged school days in the Cape, where the Simonsberg drinks the Blood Orange sun at dusk. James Dean and Wilbur Smith have two-bit parts in this drama that begins with man landing on the moon and ends with Mandela riding a mermaid to freedom. Described as a zany Catcher in the Rye.

Blood Orange is performed by Craig Morris and directed by Greig Coetzee. There will be two performances at the Hexagon Theatre on the University of KZN Pietermaritzburg campus on February 23 and 24 at 19h30. Tickets R50 (R40 students/seniors). Bookings on 033 260 5537 or e-mail hexagon@ukzn.ac.za
