TWELFTH NIGHT (article first published : 2000-08-14)

Blending choppy seas, hot sand, swaying palm trees, romantic 1930's style and enchanting silver moonlight, director Ralph Lawson and designer Peter Cazalet have painted Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night with a fresh palette.

Twelfth Night lends itself better to an updated treatment than most of Shakespeare’s plays,” says Ralph Lawson. “Little needs to be compromised or stretched in any way and no corners need be cut. In fact, the dialogue and, particularly, the comedy can emerge as relevant and fresh - so I think the experiment should appeal to young audiences and traditionalists and it should prove to be a big hit.”

Set in the 1930's Eastern Tropics, with chic, stylish characters "this contemporary approach aims to appeal to traditional theatre-goers while making Shakespeare accessible to a wider audience".

A combination of poetry and prose, tragedy and comedy, joy and grief, bereavement and disappointment, Twelfth Night captures the mischief and essence of the human spirit .Subtitled What You Will, Shakespeare invites the audience to interpret the play as they see fit- avoiding the need for lofty intellectual interpretations.

Appearing in the cast will be well-known Durban theatre personalities Garth Anderson, Leeanda Reddy, Tamar Meskin, Aldo Brincat, Belinda Henwood and Johannesburg actor John Whiteley who has appeared in many drama productions in Durban. Jazz musician Roland Moses from the Brian Thusi Sextet has been commissioned to write the music.

Twelfth Night will be presented by the Playhouse Company in the Drama Theatre from August 23 to September 9. Performances take place nightly Tuesday to Saturday at 19h00 with a performance on Sundays at 18h00. There is an extra matinee performance on Saturdays at 14h00.
