PEACE IN OUR LIFETIME MUSICAL (article first published : 2007-01-30)

The Eager Artists theatre company will present Peace in our Lifetime Musical in the Playhouse Drama Theatre.

Written and directed by Jerry Pooe, with music arrangement by Brian Thusi and choreography by Thulebona Mzizi, the show opened at the Winston Churchill Theatre in Pietermaritzburg last December and recently finished a successful tour of KZN.

Peace in our Lifetime is based on the story of Pooe’s Peace in the Valley which was first mounted at the Playhouse Drama Theatre on a professional stage in March 2000, after being staged at PACOFS, BAT Centre and Technikon Natal, in a smaller scale in 1998. The show also enjoyed a successful tour to western New York and Canada in June 2000.

The musical has been reworked to look at issues in a democratic society and peace on the African continent as a whole. Inspired by Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet as well as Leonard Bernstein’s musical version, West Side Story, it is the tale of star-crossed lovers Sputla and Maria who come from different townships. They despairingly declare their feelings for each other and watch their love become battered and eventually crushed in conditions of conflict, revenge and gang warfare.

Jerry Pooe is grateful to the KZN Office of the Premier for funding this production so that the whole province of KZN, particularly the smaller towns, can have the benefit and experience of professional theatre.

Performances in the Playhouse Drama from February 1 to 7 at 19h30 (14h30 on Sunday). Tickets R40 (R20 students and children) booked through Computicket or the Playhouse Box Office. More information from Eager Artists on 031 301 8752.
