CHRIS SEABROOKE THEATRE @ DHS (article first published : 2007-01-30)

Currently a hive of construction and simply scaffolding, bricks and rubble at the moment, the Chris Seabrooke Theatre @ DHS is liable to make a strong impact on the local theatre industry.

“Durban High School (DHS) already has a proud theatrical tradition, having presented works at the Grahamstown National Arts Festival, as well as at the Hilton Arts Festival, so a new Drama facility has been on the wish list for some time,“ says DHS drama teacher Shaun Gray, who has been appointed director of the theatre.

The Chris Seabrooke Theatre @ DHS will open at Durban High School with a weekend festival in May and will be known informally as Seabrooke’s. The air-conditioned venue will have a capacity of approximately 120 seats and full technical facilities. The Theatre will be used to enhance the teaching of Drama at the school as well as being open to the public as a full-time commercial theatre.

Chris Seabrooke is a DHS Old Boy and Dux of the School in his year. He is a philanthropist and businessman who is Chairman or a Director of seven groups listed on the JSE or Nasdaq in the USA – Sabvest, Massmart, Setpoint Technologies, Metrofile, Primedia, Datatec and Net 1 Technologies. He has always had a keen interest in theatre.

He is a former Chairman of the South African State Theatre and former Deputy Chairman of the inaugural National Arts Council of South Africa and the founding Board of Business and Arts South Africa (BASA).

He has produced or financed over 30 stage shows in South Africa, the UK, Australia and the USA, and has been nominated for a Tony Award on Broadway. He also sponsors three of The Naledi Awards annually in Gauteng.

For bookings or any other information, contact the Director of Seabrooke’s, Shaun Gray, on 031 277 1500 or e-mail: drama@durbanhighschool.co.za
