SNOW WHITE (article first published : 2007-01-23)

Last year's outrageous saucy adult panto - Snow White - returns to the Hexagon Theatre in Pietermaritzburg after an extended season in Durban.

“Snow White, Yeah Right!” says the publicity blurb firmly tongue-in cheek. “There is a classic story of good, evil, eternal love and seven vertically challenged mineworkers with hearts of gold living a chaste existence with a beautiful girl in an isolated cottage in the woods (this is why it's called a fairytale, boys and girls.)

“There is a heartwarming tale of the triumph of true love over wickedness and a broken home and one girl's nasty brush with a genetically modified fruit. Sadly this is not that story. Of course no expense has been spared to attract the usual world-class cast of drunks, unemployed pole dancers, the customary token beefcake (who usually comes leaping out of the closet before opening night) as well as some of Durban's finest actors and actresses (who really should know better.)

“Yes folks it's panto time again, a time when intelligent wit and dramatic finesse take a short holiday in the Bahamas, to be replaced by outrageous below-the-belt humour (very tastefully handled) , double entendres (no it's not a drink but I'll give you one anyway) , rousing singalongs and more knob jokes than you can shake a stick at.

Forget all the other popular fairytales out there (The healing power of showers and Anthony Stonier's real age, to name just two) Snow White at the Catalina is the one you don't want to miss!”

Snow White stars Anthony Stonier as Queen Acerbia; Peter Court as Fairy Nuff (the only swamp fairy); Karen Campbell-Gillies as Snow White, Damon Thomas as the Handsome Prince and Rowan Bartlett as Michael, the Huntsman. It is written by Anthony Stonier, Karen Campbell-Gillies and Peter Court and directed (for the first time) by Karen Campbell-Gillies.

"We are particularly excited about this panto. It is a fabulous new story-line and a brilliantly-written script which also capitalises on some of the most successful and outrageous visual and verbal gags which the audiences have enjoyed over the past five pantomimes making Snow White a real audience-pleaser," said producer Sue Clarence.

Snow White - The Adult Panto has performances at the Hexagon Theatre in Pietermaritzburg on February 9 at 20h30 and February 10 at 18h00. Tickets R60 - Adults Only! Bookings on 033 260 5537 or e-mail hexagon@ukzn.ac.za
