DOWN WITH THE BROWN (article first published : 2007-01-23)

Fresh from his successful three-week run in South Africa, hosting the main stage of the 10th Cape Town International Comedy Festival, Canadian comedy superstar Sugar Sammy is soon to appear in his new show, Down With The Brown.

Blessed with natural charisma, Bollywood good looks and the gift of the gab, Sugar Sammy has the “it” factor that illustrates the reason why comedians are the ‘rock stars’ of this generation.

One of the hottest comedians on the international circuit, Sugar Sammy has enjoyed considerable success in his own country and was voted number one stand-up for the years 2004, 2005 and 2006 by the readers of The Montreal Mirror, Montreal's premier Arts and Entertainment Weekly.

He has set attendance records and has received rave reviews across North America and Europe. Critics are unanimous in their praise of his hilarious material and his laconic delivery. Sugar Sammy has also appeared on The Comedy Network, at The Hollywood Comedy Festival in Los Angeles and at the 2004 and 2005 Just For Laughs Festivals – the world’s largest and most prestigious comedy festival.

In Down With The Brown, he uses his fresh and edgy insight to explore the dichotomy between his life in a conventional East-Indian home in Canada and his experiences in the heart of the entertainment industry.

Sugar Sammy stirs up and samples the multi-cultural melting pot that mirrors life in most urban centres today. In so doing, he presents hilarious scenarios and comments on our global society’s inherent contradictions in a brilliantly entertaining way which can be enjoyed by all South Africans.

From arranged marriage and his Indian ancestry to his views on deviant sex, drugs and relationships, Down With The Brown promises to get audiences laughing and thinking and maybe even seeing life in general a little less seriously!

Hour magazine – the definitive word on comedy – called Sugar Sammy …”a comprehensive entertainment solution – splicing, editing and evolving as he fuses marketing, pop and urban cultures into a tasty treat for the kids. When you start to think he's all hype, he'll tag a joke to death with all the skills of a professional, creating an eruption of laughter”.

Down With The Brown also features one of South Africa’s most promising comedy talents, Loyiso Gola, who will perform an opening set each night. Loyiso boasts a completely fresh and unique voice that speaks for his generation, and will perfectly balance the North American perspectives that Sugar Sammy will bring to the production.

Down With The Brown runs in the iZulu Theatre at Sibaya Casino & Entertainment Kingdom from February 6 until March 4.Book at Sibaya box office on 031 580 5555.
