COSí COSU (article first published : 2000-08-9)

This year The South African Womenís Arts Festival presented by the Playhouse Company and Transnet has introduced something for the children to enjoy. Cosí Cosu is directed by well-known award-winning Durban actor Nathi Kunene and will have a performance today (August 9) at 11h00 in the Playhouse Studio. The Friday performance is sold out.

Presented in the traditional storytelling format, Cosí Cosu is performed in both English and isiZulu. Nolwazi and Nobuhle - played by Siwela Sonke Dance Theatre dancers Ntombi Gasa and Neliswa Rushualang - live with their grandmother and two young male cousins. The boys are the apple of their grandmotherís eye, and when the boys accidentally burn their gogoís grass mat, they blame the girls.

The girls are punished by being sent to cut incema, a special kind of grass for making grass mats. They cross rivers, climb the face of cliffs, wander through dark forests and encounter many exciting and dangerous situations before succeeding. Through the hardships they endure, they realise that they can be as strong and as powerful as any boy.

Cosí Cosu also features Bheki Khabela, Sduduzo Khawula and Bhekani Shabalala with Nomthetho Sibisi as the gogo/narrator. Tickets R10.
